metaphysical properties of ‘the ring’:

The metaphysical properties of the ring was the ability to assume great and terrible, almost invincible magical power and evil influence. The cost was becoming a vitual slave of Sauron, who would assume control of the Ringbearer’s mind and body, making him a “Ringwraith”, a zombie-like spirit without physical form or free will totally under the control of Sauron.

Why Bilbo “took so little hurt” from his ownership of the Ring:

According to the book, Bilbo only used the Ring infrequently during the period after he returned to the Shire –mostly to avoid annoying tradesmen and relatives. Also, according to Gandalf, Bllbos essentially simple, honest and pure nature diminished the evil influences of the Ring.

Diminished, but not eliminated: Bilbo’s long life was a sign of the increasing influence of the Ring, and his obsession with it grew stronger,as Gandalf realized when he forced Bilbo to fulfill his promise to leave the Ring behind when the left the Shire after his “Birthday party”.

Why will the murder of Déagol will resonate through the rest of the novel?:

Deagol’s discovery of the ring with his cousin Smeagol set in motion the events that eventually led to Bilbo’s finding the Ring and bringing it to the Shire. Smegol’s obsession with posessing the Ring caused him to murder Deagol, which led him to flee into the depths of the Misty Mountains with the Ring, where Bilbo eventually found the ring; and Smeagol, now Gollum, was forced to leave the mountains and pursue his obsession, finally leading to the eventual denoument with Frodo in Mordor.

Why is Frodo willing to assume responsibility of the ring?:

Frodo was not really so anxious to take the the responsibility for the Ring, but, Gandalf convinced him that Frodo must be the “Ringbearer” as part of the Fellowship. Frodo’s uncomplicated and innocent character was a safeguard against the Ring using its evil influence on a Ringbear with more power and ambition who could be turned to evil and wield far more dangerous powers and influence.
