Did anyone find the material about Christopher Columbus in our textbooks today amazing?

I was reading some history textbooks in the early American history when I found a huge lack of information in the text. Christopher Columbus not meet the natives, he and his slaves, slaves, and put to work in the cotton fields, gold mining, and other things. The pilgrims came to America in search of new lands. They came because of their lack of gold! The texbooks not mention anything about this and what kind of person Columbus. Do not even say how much he paid for the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria.

MUST read "Lies My Teacher Told Me" by James Loewen. It covers these topics and many others. He taught history in a unversity and could not understand why he had to reach students to "unlearn" what they received from their textbooks high school American history. One reason is that these textbooks do not show the history as it was, but they are trying to teach patriotism and a sense of civic duty. Loewen calls "civil religion." It's silly and does a disservice to everyone: teachers and students. Why not tell things as they were, warts and all? What did the founding fathers, for example, was monumental and unprecedented. Do they also have to have been saints? Can not be described as human beings were defective? You will love this book. Hold on until he learns the truth about Helen Keller and so they were never told about it.
