Why is forgiveness so healing?

What is it about the act of forgiving someone who hurt you that lets you move on? I have three siblings. The two of us that forgave our parents for our terrible childhood are doing fine. The two that continue to harbor nothing but vile hate towards our mother are drug addicts and adults still living at home (in their mid to late 20s).

What is it about this simple act that is so powerful?

When you forgive someone, you are acknowledging to yourself whatever damage was done. You are accepting all transgressions as an unchangeable part of your life- those things happened and there is no changing it.

Forgiveness comes from a place inside you that doesn’t want to ruminate on past events. You are tired of thinking about, tired of trying to figure it out, and you notice that holding onto those thoughts in anger and hate only takes your present moment and your future as long as you don’t commit to leaving it in the past.

Forgiveness is saying “I may be damaged, you may have had bad motives, but whats important to me is my health, wellbeing and future.

Forgiveness works on the time principle for its value. As human beings, the only one true resource we have is time to live. And we only have one mind, so if you spend that thought currency on rumination, you’re not spending on delight.

So long as one does not forgive and if they are actively engaged in hate and rumination (they didn’t just forget about the transgression) they are committing some irrecoverable amount of their thought process on resentment. That is thought process that is not spent thinking about nice things, appreciation, doing things for others…
