Due to the high refractive index of the diamond, much of the light that penetrates inside the crystal is completely reflected many times, causing the diamond 'spark'. The facets cut at certain angles, simply increases the amount of total internal reflection to reflect light at an angle greater than the crystals' critical angle, making it shine even more (ie, remains light for a longer period) Diamonds also cause refraction and that's why sometimes you can see other colors (like red and yellow) as the light breaks into its component colors (similar to what a prism.)
