Altar Bell
In the Catholic Mass, what do the bells during the blessing of the gifts you say?
When the priest lifts the body or blood, and says: "Do this in remembrance of me" and one of the little altar servers ring, what do they mean? What is its purpose? I've always wondered this, but never taught us in school (and went to Catholic school, I was an altar boy) bus driving Bad Wolf, I think we know that the priest wants to be remembered, but he is repeating what Jesus said at the Last Supper. I know, and I did not explain because people know I knew that silly:)
Now it is a tradition. Mass used to be in Latin and most people did not understand the words being said, so that during mass to pray the rosary, or some other individual prayer. The bells that to get attention on the elevation of the host so they can show reverence for the Body Jesus in the Eucharist. God bless Stanbo
